Adventures with a Linksys WRT-54GL

I needed to beef up my home wireless setup recently, and rearrange the domestic network generally. I got a Linksys WRT-54GL. It's now the home internet gateway,

I've replaced the original firmware with OpenWRT. I was attracted by its package range and general Debian-like package flexibility.

Web content filtering

I use the most excellent Dan's Guardian to filter web content for our children. I found a reference on the OpenWRT website suggesting that it was possible to run Dan's Guardian on some Linksys, though without the large URL blacklist. But this was with a WRT54GS version 1, which has 32Mb RAM. The WRT54GL has 16Mb. As you might imagine, when trying to start Dan's Guardian, it errors reading the configuration with an error message 'bad_alloc'. I guess it might be worth trying again after paring the machine configuration to the bone by, for example, removing the web interface.
